Robots and agricultural machines are designed by engineers, and it shows. Sheet metal covers, visible fasteners, a shape that follows the frame underneath rather than anything a buyer would choose. We want a designer who can change that without pretending the engineering is not there.
What good looks like
The machine looks like something a buyer chose, and every panel of it can be laid up in fiberglass and bolted to the frame that is already there. A rendering nobody can build is not the outcome.
What you do
- Design concepts for exterior bodywork, covers, housings and structural parts.
- Hand sketches, digital sketches, design studies.
- Define the visual language: proportion, surfaces, transitions, edges, openings.
- Build the visualisations and present them to the customer.
- Turn a customer's requirements into several directions, not one.
- Work the concept against ventilation, access panels, sensors, thermal limits and the mounting points that already exist.
- Develop the chosen direction into CAD with our mechanical engineers, through to a part that can actually be made.
- Feed what the prototype and the manufacturer tell you back into the next iteration.
What you bring
- A background in industrial, product, technical product or transportation design.
- Strong sketching and concept development.
- A feel for form, proportion, surfaces, materials and how a product reads.
- CAD or surface modelling.
- Enough engineering literacy to read drawings, mounting concepts and assemblies.
- An understanding of how mechanical products are assembled, and of design for manufacturing.
- Fiberglass and composite manufacturing, or the appetite to learn it.
Nice to have
- Robotics, agricultural machinery, industrial equipment or vehicle design.
- Low-volume manufacturing.
- Sheet metal and welding basics.
